Course content

Safety, seamanship and helmsmanship.  An introduction to equipment on board the yacht, rules of the road and meteorology.

Notes: RYA Helmsman course is for motor yachts, and in tidal or non-tidal waters.  Due to our location all our courses are tidal, and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly.

This is a great course for those new to motor yachts who would like a good introduction, see how they handle and complete some short trips.

This is very much a hands-on course with little time to teach navigation or other theoretical subjects.  It introduces complete beginners to motor cruising and teaches basic boat handling, safety, seamanship, an introduction to engine maintenance and helmsmanship to the level required to be a useful member of the crew of a motor cruising yacht.

The duration of the course is two days, and you will return to the base marina each night.

Suggested itinerary

This is a two day course which comes back to the base marina every night.  It is often run in conjunction with the Day Skipper course.  You spend the two days getting familiar with the boat and explore the anchorages away from the beaten track around Tenerife.

Starts

We ask our clients to arrive on a Friday between 10:00 and 18:30 so we can collect you from Tenerife South airport (we can collect you between 10:30 and 19:30).  Outside these times we ask you to get a taxi to the marina which costs about €15.

Ends

We ask you to get a flight home on the Friday between 12:00 and 21:00 (we can take you to the airport between 10:00 and 19:00).  Outside these times we ask you to get a taxi to the marina which costs about €15.

Seasickness - It is advisable to bring with you a seasickness remedy if you have suffered in the past.  There is a local chemist in the town of Las Galletas – ask your Instructor where it is at the Friday night drink.

Notes: All bedding, bed linen (sheet, duvet cover and pillow) and a towel are provided.  Please make sure that you let us know if you suffer from allergies as we provide feather pillows as standard.

Recommended clothes

The climate in the Canaries is temperate.  You are recommended to bring with you shorts and t-shirts, a jumper/cardigan, long jeans/trousers and jumper for the odd cooler evening in the winter months, shoes with non-marking bottoms for use on the boat, swimwear and something for dinners ashore.  As the boat has limited storage space a sailing bag / holdall is the most suitable luggage.
